Thirza Browne Cole, 209 N School Street, private building – stay on sidewalk

In 1922 nurse Thirza Browne Cole and her sister Nellie Browne Yates bought the 14-bed Mason Hospital at 209 N School Street. In 1941 they added 11 more beds and an operating room. Like Edith Barbee Buchanan, Thirza mentored other nurses and supported Lodi’s volunteer nurse aides. After 29 years of service, Thirza and Nellie sold Mason Hospital to two of their employees, another pair of Lodi women. Shadows of the faded MASON letters can still be seen on the building today.
