Calling all Rabble-Rousers!
Come to Lodi to celebrate one of California’s boldest originals — Laura DeForce Gordon. In 1870, Laura stepped off a train into what was then our Wild West railroad town and set out to change the world. She won praise from Susan B. Anthony and became California’s second female attorney, challenging California’s “boozy rascals” to get sober, act fairly, and — most controversially — give women the right to vote.
Lodi’s Laura DeForce Gordon Day celebrates Laura’s fearless spirit with play, thoughtful presentations, and community building.
The games are silly on purpose: Shouting your truth in the Booing Contest and working in teams through the Legislative Obstacle Course take the same mix of courage and cooperation that shaped America’s suffrage cause. Ours is history that shimmies… giggles… and Tosses its Brassieres in joyful exultation.
Since A&W root beer was invented in Lodi as an alternative to alcohol, at Laura DeForce Gordon Day we pour A&W Root Beer floats at Lola’s Saloon — a nod to Laura’s anti-alcohol temperance work. As a fundraiser for local students, we sell fancy hats at Mary Tindell’s Hat Shoppe.
We also face the hard parts of California’s past, including the anti-Chinese racism of Laura’s times. Laura DeForce Gordon Day is a wonderful opportunity to showcase stories of America’s many brave women of color who also fought for voting rights. In consultation with the local Chinese-American community, we look history right in the eye — we don’t erase it.
Our annual Laura DeForce Gordon Day is held on the Saturday closest to Laura’s birthday. Everyone is welcome — families, out-of-towners, and long-time locals alike. Before and after the event, you can meet Lodi’s costumed tour guide for a free walking tour, visit historic sites, and — when Laura’s not looking! — sample many delightful local wines in Lodi’s 60 tasting rooms.
California — come ready to play, learn, and rediscover the rabble-rousing heart of old Lodi!
